Canada - VICE DC Last Rites

Since VICE and DC love any excuse to get dressed up, get sauced and talk shit about art, we decided to host two Halloween parties in Vancouver and Toronto, featuring the work of some of our favorite artists.

But art shows are generally boring. So to spice up things, we made sure both venues were true to the Halloween theme.  The Vancouver show was held at The Chapel art gallery:  East Vancouver’s century old funeral home turned art gallery.  And the Toronto event was held at Bates and Dodds Funeral Home across from Trinity Bellwoods park; an active funeral parlor rich with the warm aroma of embalming fluid.

It was a relatively classy affair in Vancouver, mostly because we couldn’t convince many people to dress up five days before Halloween. But it didn’t matter because the place was packed full of people looking to drink some Coors and impress their dates by pretending to know something about art.

The Toronto party started with a bang when VICE staffers stumbled into a room with a corpse all done up for its big day (seriously). Now this must have caused some shit-show-party-dust to be sprinkled around the place because once people started arriving it’s like they were trying Vodka-Redbulls for the first time. Of course it’s not like anyone there would have been opposed to the idea of watching a drunken sheet-ghost down a beer like his life depended on it. Plus, it’s not every day that you can sit in a church pew at a family owned funeral home and appreciate art with people dressed up like slutty maids and Charles Manson. All in all everyone had a good time, we got some culture and the funeral home was up and running the very next day.
