The traditional “alternative” craft fair dynamic involves brooding indie waifs and fag hags hawking goods to breeders and Democrats. But all’s out the window with La Superette, an annual weekend-long melee with cheap, strange shit you may not need but kind of can't resist (such as whatever the hell that is in the picture above, or how about a Morse code necklace that spells out “Fuck You” in beads?) and noise band performances sprinkled throughout. They kick off their 11-year anniversary (this time at a mysterious space on the corner of Front and John near the South Street Seaport; cryptic instructions say to look for some door beneath a flagpole) on Friday night with a no-shopping party, just a live show with Lucky Dragons, Fat Worm of Error, Madame Chao, and Aa (Big A little a).
is that a pocket bong?

don't most people in new york already have more than enough junk to fill their tiny apartments. also, $75 for a scarf is not cheap in my book. granted, i am a poor motherfucker.

the things shown here look cool, but the stuff on the website don't look all that different than regular, run-of-the-mill craft stuff. is it worth a trip to manhattan or not? i need more convincing.

maybe more exciting are the dog's wigs and costumes, make your own paper boat kits, lucky pennies necklaces, laser cut cardboard animals, garbage bags tote bags etc. also, the installations this year looks fabulous, the video, DIY snacks, etc.
One more thing to add that this a not-for-profit event so it's a different vibe than another craft fair. give it a try!
