I'd take a sponsorship without regret as long as I didn't have any major qualms with the company. If you don't change your aim because of it then it's not selling out. Like Brian says, "we live in a world where you need dollars if you want to survive." Get your dollars so you can keep doing what you love. If you can't afford to, the only person you're selling out is yourself.

Bloopers in my pants

Refreshing. I dont know if theyre talking hype a little though. I mean, how can a show like this get along without some co. sponsors nowadays?

Shredcandy

I don't think the humor in metal should be any more than satire or extreme corniness. Any "on purpose" humor aside from the dark and serious side would look dumb.

gracie doo

If a day in the life of a rocker is to wake up first and check their Paypal account second, how is co. sponsorship bad? Hypocrite.

bandit a la mode

Bands outside the US seem to be way more hardcore. I think shows should push these guys to come over here and rock.

There’s also this thing now where people make harsh walls of noise. That doesn’t interest me too much. I’m not really into effects personally and I can’t always tell when I listen to it.

I was trying to talk about a shift from harsh noise to ambient amongst some projects lately, "now" - shortened statement. What I meant was, I'm not into pedal noise, though I can't always tell what people are using when I listen to it. Harsh noise is nothing new.

For me this festival isn't a moral statement or about sponsorship or lack of sponsorship, it's about a room, bands playing in it, and people watching. Any talk about our process of organization comes second to the event itself. We were open to involving others in making this festival happen, but at the end of the day nobody was interested enough to follow through with action, whether it be out of laziness, selfishness, or lack of resources. So we just took it on ourselves.

NERDS!

uhh i hate artists

henry

People should give Chicago more credit. There are a shit load of talented musicians. New York is a joke.

reading is easy

@henry: this isn't about Chicago artists vs. New York artists or for that matter Chicago vs. New York at all, in any way, shape, or form. Which begs the question: do you have a Sears Tower-size chip on your shoulder or are you just illiterate?

pal

wait, a blackmetal fest wherev they're comnplaining about too much distortion? really?

dongy

this seems like a festival that is more going for the "cool factor" than it is for subversive music. this nichole character obviously doesn't understand black metal at all other than that it's becoming hip and trendy now (see: scion rock fest). real black metal folks from rural areas tend to be disturbed and disturbing hicks(even the european ones). there's a certain ftw aspect that has made some modern cool kids latch on to it so it gets billed in festivals like this with cultured and hip urban post-suburbanites, the complete antithesis of the traditional black metal musician. i think noise is pretty pure though. in the noise scene where i live, everyone is doing it for the love of it. the only hot girls around are the ones who are also doing noise stuff. actually, the only people at ANY of the shows are noise musicians themselves. the harsh noise stuff tends to be a bit self-indulgent but there are some great full-band acts that are very rehearsed and tight with actual songs.

ST

@dongy: I agree with your comments on the 'cool factor' versus true subversive music. I think Nichole and company could've done more in that regard by flying in Judas Priest rather than some Hungarian black metal band!

phil b

Distortion is one of the emptiest ways to make noise. That along with just making shit loud.

bryan clopton

I think that you guys should learn how to 'spell' 'Nicole' and you might want to go to the library and check out a book on a 'sense of humor.' And while you're there? Pick up one on 'not writing like a five year old'.

A.

bry bry is the shit!

Theatro Ultra Lounge

wtf you should've included a picture of Nicole here, cuz she is like smokin hot. really.

stereo bionic

The idea of the fest and the black metal aspect of it was from Jackie and friends, Nicole just did most of the work to make it happen and hooked up the noise bands.

chicagoan

There were no sponsors really. "support" doesn't have to be financial. It was information based, or enthusiasm for the most part.

AS

I don't think Aquarius went, but at the time of the interview they were intending on going. Many people involved and different levels of communication, if there is any misinformation that would be the reason.

less_cunning
